A design and AI publication with a human eye: news that explains what changes in a designer’s work, approved one story at a time.
Context
AI tools arrive every week, and most of the news about them never explains what changes in a designer’s work. I wanted one place to follow what matters for design. uPAPER began as a simple weekly briefing and tried other formats, from a creative radar to a news portal, before it became a publication with an identity of its own.
Objective
Publish news, cases and AI studies that are useful to people in design and creative culture, each with a real cover and a direct source. The line is “Design, IA e um olhar humano”: design, AI and a human eye. It is also an experiment in what a designer’s eye can make with the technology.
Process
The reading experience came first. It is calm and built as a list, with fewer themes, fewer distractions and a Lab where each edition explores images made with AI. Rules protect the human part. I check every story and approve every edition before it goes out, and while AI helps build the product and sort the news, a person decides what gets published.
Identity
The identity comes from my own brand board, a sunny yellow and a hand-drawn line under the motto “Rabiscos por escolha”, scribbles by choice. Hand lettering sits next to a typeface made for easy reading, and readers can switch between four themes. The brand keeps its sense of humour too: a “100% AI slop” seal doubles as the like button. The voice is one designer explaining a discovery to another.
Outcome
uPAPER is live at upaper.blog in Portuguese, English and Spanish, with new editions almost every day, each one approved by me.
